Moving up to PeeWee level in hockey was a big deal. You were one of the big kids now! That was the year that you were allowed to body check and use real slap shots. 

Most kids were pumped. I wasn’t. Not only was I the closest thing to a hockey pacifist that you would find (I didn’t like checking and it drove my coaches crazy), but I also had a horrible slap shot. 

I practiced and practiced in the driveway. My parents set up a big tarp over the garage with a piece of slick plastic for me to shoot from. 

In team practices with 20 other kids, my regular coaches just didn’t have time or enough specific knowledge to give me any meaningful help. 

I tried to mimic the movements of the other players to see how they were able to get so much power in their shot, but mine always seemed to flip around like a wounded duck, or I’d miss the puck completely. There had to be something I was missing! 

After two seasons of just resigning myself to being bad at slap shots, my dad came at me with a different idea.

“Why don’t we get you some shooting lessons?”

He’d heard through the parent grapevine about a retired NHL player who was teaching young players how to shoot and stickhandle more effectively, out of his garage. This would be the final attempt. Would I learn how to take a good slap shot, or would I flop yet again? 

In 90 minutes with the shooting coach, I upped my slap shot velocity by about 50%. I was flabbergasted. He switched up how I was holding the stick, how I was positioning my body in relation to the puck, and where my stick was hitting. 

The next season, I had one of the best slap shots on the team. 

The difference? Personalized coaching from a professional.

To be fair, going from zero to hero in one session probably isn’t the norm. But the fact remains, I had gotten as far as I could go on my own. I thought I was a lost cause, but I really just didn’t have the help I needed to find my full potential.
