There’s More to Living than Being Alive!

At Ripple Effect, we’re not just satisfied with helping someone live LONGER.

We want to help our people live BETTER.

As my all-time favorite band Anberlin once said: “There’s more to living than being alive.” 

We think about two separate pieces of the health puzzle: your lifespan, and your healthspan.

Your lifespan is simply how long you live. If you theoretically died at 99 years old, your lifespan would 99 years. 

Your healthspan is the portion of that lifespan that you are still in good health. You’re relatively or completely self sufficient. You have the energy and ability to enjoy your hobbies. You still have high quality of life. 

In a perfect world, your lifespan and healthspan are the same number: you had great quality of life until the last possible moment. In reality, there’s often a big gap between the end of the healthspan, and the end of the lifespan. Those years of living without good health are tough — for the person living them out, and their family & friends seeing them struggle. 

Our health care system for the most part is only concerned with extending lifespan. At Ripple Effect we believe that extending your lifespan, without also extending your heathspan, is a fool’s errand. What’s the point of living an extra 5 years if you’re too feeble to enjoy it? 

Don’t get us wrong — modern medicine is amazing in many ways! So many conditions and diseases that used to be life-threatening are no big deal now. But for the most part, the doctor is just worried about keeping you from dying — they’re not so much concerned with how well you’re living. That’s where we come in. 

Our goal at Ripple Effect is to improve your lifespan, AND your healthspan!

Strength training makes you stronger (obviously!). A strong human is more resilient to injuries, has a healthier immune system, has better bone density, has better balance, and in general is just more capable of doing any physical task that comes along. A human with all those physical qualities is probably going to be happier too! It just feels GOOD to be strong. 

Strength training is the closest thing we have to the “Fountain of Youth.” 

It’s never too late to start making progress on this stuff, but it’s similar to compound interest: the sooner you start investing, the better your returns will be when you’re older.
