Don’t Wait for “Normal”

Don’t Wait For Things to “Go Back to Normal”

2020 has been…a year. We don’t know much about what the future holds, but we think it’s safe to say that most people will continue to be at home more than in years past. The only thing that is certain, is more uncertainty.

From a fitness standpoint, we know this can be challenging for a lot of people. The act of going to the gym, seeing your friends, and using the fun equipment are all big motivators for people to work out.

When gyms had to close down earlier this year, we heard from a lot of folks that they were going to “wait until things got back to normal” before they start working out again.

This may have made sense when it was only going to be a two week shutdown. Now, it’s been about three months. Gyms in MN are open again, but with limited capacity, limited class times, and limited equipment in many cases.

We don’t know how long it’ll last. It’s a very real possibility that more Stay At Home orders or business shutdowns could be coming. For those of you who didn’t work out those three months, but are now back in classes, it’s important to think about what you’ll do if another shutdown happens. We’re not judging! We know it’s been a really hard year. We say this because we care:

You can’t wait for things to go back to normal. Things might not be normal for the rest of the year!

It’s never been more important to take good care of your mind and body.

This means for most of us that we have to seriously alter our expectations for what “working out” means. We can’t afford to be stubborn, or carry an “all or nothing mentality.”

Chances are slim you’ll get your ideal workout, at your ideal time, at your ideal place right now. Meanwhile, life goes on. Your body needs movement. Every day you have the opportunity to take another little step forward in your health.

If you’ve put your health on hold during the pandemic, we encourage you start that journey again. It might not look like it did before, and that’s ok.

Think to yourself: what is ONE small thing I could do today to help my body? Something that you feel is truly 100% doable. Maybe it’s going for a walk around the block in the morning. Maybe it’s doing 10 squats every time you take a bathroom break.

Do that thing. Then do it again tomorrow. Keep doing it until it’s a habit.

Then, think of another small thing, and do that. Not sure where to start? We’re here to help.

Little by little, a little becomes a lot. It’s still worth moving forward in your fitness journey, even if it’s more of a crawl than the sprint you were hoping for. Your future self will thank you!
